The Holyhead ferry port is set to reopen Stena Line’s berth, Terminal 5, on January 16, 2025, having been closed extensive damage from Storm Darragh.
The two ferry companies have agreed to share the berth as soon as it is signed off for opening by safety inspectors.
Stena Line has confirmed that the reopening depends on reasonable weather conditions and has not yet provided a timeline for the reopening of Terminal 3, the Irish Ferries berth.
Recent storms caused significant structural damage, requiring inspections and leading to the cancellation of ferry services between Dublin and Holyhead.
Alternative travel routes are available for passengers while ferry services are being restored, with Irish Ferries adjusting schedules to accommodate limited berth availability.
Stena Line shared: ““After diligent assessments and planning, we can now confirm that the timeline for reopening the Holyhead Terminal 5 ferry berth by January 16 2025 remains achievable. This prediction is subject to reasonable weather conditions, and we will provide further updates as our progress continues. Up until the reopening of the Terminal 5 berth, alternative routes for travel include Birkenhead to Dublin (motorists only), Fishguard to Dublin, Fishguard to Rosslare, Cairnryan to Belfast and Liverpool to Belfast.”
Irish Ferries shared: “With a phased re-opening plan of Holyhead port that involves more limited berth availability, Irish Ferries has agreed a timetable with the other operator that will allow Irish Ferries to operate full schedules into Terminal 5. With clarity now on the situation for the coming weeks, Irish Ferries will continue to review what further route measures are required to ensure the needs of its passenger and freight customers are met:
- Additional capacity with the Ulysses on the Dublin/Cherbourg route.
- Additional capacity on the Rosslare / Pembroke route with the larger James Joyce.
- A new car service on the Fishguard/Dublin route over the festive period to meet the needs of the peak Christmas passenger demand.
- Temporary additional sailings confirmed on the Dublin/Pembroke route from 7 January for cars and accompanied freight.
