Supply chain executives, including Airbus and Boeing, have called for added capacity and new entrants to address shortages for new aircraft and MRO needs at an event in London.

Aviation Week MRO Europe delegates were told Boeing and Airbus have difficulty ramping production while older fleets require more maintenance, straining parts like flight deck windows down to one supplier. Shortages affect fasteners to complex components in structural and actuation areas.

Efforts include efficiency gains and USM expansion, but gaps persist requiring alternate sources.

Manufacturers must share demand forecasts to aid supplier investments in certification-heavy parts like gear and flight controls.

William Ampofo shared “With the supply base, I do think there’s going to have to be capacity added.”

Richard Stoddart shared “The challenges in certification and the huge investment that’s needed to develop some of these complex systems—gear, flight controls.”
