Catalonia has attracted more than 9.5m international visitors in the first half of 2026, representing a 3.45pc increase, with spending rising 11.68pc to €11,800m. The Balearic Islands have emerged as the most popular destination in June with almost 2.3m arrivals, while Andalusia has recorded strong growth of 7.8pc in the half year.
Hotels in urban Barcelona continue to rank among the most profitable in the country, supported by major cultural and sporting events that have driven consistent demand throughout the period. The regional distribution of tourism has shown notable variation, with coastal destinations maintaining their traditional appeal while inland cities have benefited from specific event-driven demand.
The spending growth across Catalonia has outpaced visitor growth by a considerable margin, indicating increased per-traveller expenditure and a shift toward higher-value tourism. The Balearic Islands’ strong June performance reflects the peak summer seasonality typical of the archipelago, with the destination traditionally drawing substantial numbers of European visitors during the midsummer period.
Tourism authorities shared: “The regional performance data demonstrates the continued strength of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Andalusia as Spain’s primary tourism destinations, with each region showing distinct growth patterns.”
