Galway chip shop Chipeen has headed to New York to take part in Mór Fest, the city’s first fully Irish festival, running from August 19 to 23 at Tara Mór near Madison Square Garden. The pop-up follows a four-month-long residency at the Guinness Storehouse, with the team bringing key Irish ingredients including Harry’s Nutbutter and Dummond House garlic for their signature Garlic and Satay Curry sauces. Irish potatoes proved difficult to import, so American potatoes will be hand-cut fresh on site using the same cooking process as Galway and served in the memorable Chipeen cone found in their Shop Street store.
The festival features a line-up of Irish guests, entertainment, comedy, sport, culture and food, with Chipeen serving every day from 12 pm to 12 am. Joe Gaughan, who set up Chipeen with his brother Barney, will bring his two sisters to support the pop-up, maintaining the family aspect of the business. The team hopes to get as close as possible to the Chipeen experience in New York, replicating the quality and taste that has made the Galway chip shop popular in its home city.
Mór Fest brings together Irish food and drink producers, live music, comedy, sport, community events and cultural programming under one roof, featuring live performances, a comedy show with Owen Colgan, traditional music sessions with The Young Wolfe Tones, sports panels and wellness events. The programme includes a Modern Ireland panel with Cassie Stokes and James Kavanagh, a dating show hosted by Ronan Mitchell and a live interview with footballer Niall Quinn, alongside a market showcasing Irish producers and brands. Chipeen’s participation represents an opportunity to introduce Galway’s food culture to a New York audience.
Chipeen co-owner Joe Gaughan shared the opportunity came about randomly when Tara Mór contacted the team after hearing about the Galway chip shop.
Mór Fest organiser shared Chipeen represents the best of Irish food culture and will bring an authentic taste of Ireland to New York.
