An Coimisiún Pleanála has denied planning permission for the demolition of spiral parking ramps at Dublin airport.
The appeals body said the ramps are considered part of the architectural heritage of the airport and contribute to the visual amenity approaching T1.
Built in 1972, the ramps exemplify the brutalist architectural style and, according to a Dublin based architect, are deemed to possess technical and architectural merit.
DAA argues that demolishing the ramps is essential for future airport development, as they occupy a key location between two national terminals. Initial reviews did not classify the ramps as heritage assets, raising questions about their status and condition over time.
Vincent Harrison shared, “leanalathe removal of redundant, deteriorating structures within the airport campus is a necessary and strategic confirmation of the importance of unlocking future airport development potential. We are surprised and disappointed by ACP’s decision as the spiral ramps were not identified as significant heritage assets in previous architectural reviews or national surveys.”
