A London based newspaper has confirmed that Ryanair staff earn commission for enforcing the oversized bag policy of around €1.50 per bag. Commission caps at approximately €80 per staff member every month, incentivising agents to identify non-compliant bags.
Recent announcements included an increase in dimensions for the free personal bag while maintaining existing measurements for the 10kg option. Baggage fees for checking oversized items into the hold can range between €36 and €60, depending on the route.
The airline expressed commitment to eliminating oversized bags, which it claims delays boarding for compliant passengers.
Ryanair shared, “We do pay commission to our agents who identify and charge for oversized bags, but these fees are paid by less than 0.1pc of passengers who don’t comply with our agreed bags rules. For the 99.9pc of our passengers who comply with our rules, we say thank you and keep flying as you have nothing to worry about. Oversized cabin bags delay boarding and are clearly unfair on the over 99pc of our passengers who comply with our baggage rules.”
Michael O’Leary told Joe Lynam on Newstalk breakfast: It’s a policy I wholeheartedly endorse, something I’ve been advocating for many years. We do repeated passenger surveys. Nothing pisses our passengers off more than the one or two headbangers who show up at our boarding gate with an outsized rucksack claiming that they didn’t know or they try to scam to get it on, and 99.9% of our passengers don’t pay excess baggage fees. They comply with the rules. We are determined to eliminate and get rid of these irritating tiny minorities who refuse to obey, abide by the rules. What they do is they slow down boarding. They create disruption on board the aircraft. Their bags don’t fit in the overhead lockers etc etc. And we are going to will continue to encourage and in fact actively so. I boarded I was boarding a flight in Faro myself at the airport last Friday. We will actively go after that tiny minority of passengers who, despite repeated warnings, keep showing up at outsize bags. They will be paying and I’m happy to reward our staff with bonuses for that, partly because it is self-defeating. It gets rid of them and we are determined to get rid of these bags and if bonusses are the way forward, then I’ll happily pay the bonuses. In fact, I am thinking of increasing the bonusses.
