surveys of hotel prices in Spain indicate hotels in the path of totality have raised rates dramatically for the night of 12 to 13 August. In Soria the median price has climbed to around €879, while some rooms have reached €900 or higher. Teruel has seen rates of about €500, with similar increases in León and other Castile and León provinces. More than half of analysed municipalities have raised prices, some by over 100 pc, reflecting strong demand from eclipse travellers.
Today’s total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 has driven unprecedented demand for accommodation in the path of totality. Short-term rental searches in these rural regions have surged by 350 pc to 830 pc. The consulting firm AFI forecasts that rural towns along the path of totality will gain over €362m in visitor spending during eclipse week. Hoteliers across the affected regions have capitalised on the surge in bookings.
Close to 75 pc of Spain’s rural municipalities lack formal hotels, and short-term holiday rentals in private homes outnumber hotel rooms by a 40-to-1 ratio. The massive influx of astrotourism for the eclipse poses an unprecedented infrastructure and overcrowding challenge for small, rural Spanish villages. Tiny mountain towns like Arcos de las Salinas, with a permanent population of 86, are bracing for an estimated 2,000 to 30,000 visitors due to prime viewing conditions near the Galáctica Sky Observatory.
