Foreign visitors to Ireland in July up 0.8pc but down 43.2pc on pre pandemic

In July 2024, 655,400 foreign visitors travelled to Ireland, up 0.8pc on July 2023 and down 43.2pc on pre pandemic, with the largest percentage coming from Britain (32.2pc), followed by the United States (22.7pc) and Germany (7.5pc).

Foreign visitors who travelled to Ireland spent a total of 5,292,500 nights in the country, with visitors from Other Europe accounting for the most nights (37.8pc), followed by the United States and Canada (28.4pc) and Britain (19.5pc).

Visitor nights decreased by 6.2pc compared to July 2023, with the average length of stay dropping from 8.7 nights to 8.1 nights and the primary reason for travel being holiday or leisure (45.7pc).

The total amount spent by visitors on their trips in July 2024 was €919.2m, marking a 5.0pc increase from the same month in 2023.

The typical trip cost amounting to €1,403, broken down into expenses for fares, prepayments, accommodation, and day-to-day spending.

Visitors primarily stayed in hotels (41.0pc) or used family/friend accommodations (36.3pc), spending a total of €919.2m on their trips, with day-to-day expenses being the costliest category (36.7pc).

The inbound tourism figure of 1,155,100 for July 2019 is based on a different measurement.
