The Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival has taken the top spot as Europe’s best autumn food festival according to Big 7 Travel. Now in its 72nd year the festival is recognised as the world’s longest-running oyster festival and marks the start of the native flat oyster season. The event attracts roughly 25,000 visitors annually.

The festival runs from 25 to 27 September 2026 at various venues across Galway City Centre. Key events include the Irish and World Oyster Opening Championships where elite international shuckers compete for top honours. A Seafood Trail features local culinary stops and restaurants showcasing fresh catches and specialty dishes.

The festival also features lively street entertainment, live music and cultural celebrations. It was ranked ahead of Oktoberfest in Munich and the Csabai Sausage Festival in Hungary.
