Eurowings has confirmed the closure of its Dortmund base on 31 October, withdrawing its last stationed aircraft and cancelling four routes to Catania, Kavala, Thessaloniki, and Split.
The Lufthansa subsidiary will retain only the Dortmund to Palma de Mallorca service, operated from Palma, following reductions from two aircraft in 2023.
The decision stems from economic pressures including high airport charges, impacting the airport’s 2.5m passengers in 2024. Dortmund Airport authorities discussed alternatives with Sun Express, Pegasus Airlines, and Marabu after Eurowings’ 2023 station award.
The closure aligns with Munich-Dortmund suspension from April 2025, contributing to 800,000 seat reductions in Germany for winter 2025/26. Lufthansa shares held at €5.45 on 16 October, with Dortmund facing a potential €15m annual revenue loss.
