The 100,000 members of Aer Lingus Gold Circle have been transferred to Aer Club, the new Aer Lingus frequent flyer programme.

While the Gold Circle Club was an airmiles-based programme with redeemable bonus points assigned based on the duration, the new Aer Club is a revenue-based programme, with bonus points assigned in relation to the euros you spend on your flights .

The airline anticipates that it will have 300,000 AerClub members as Avios points will be collected from spends in shops, hotels and brands online via the Avios eStore.

Avios is operated by the International Airlines Group, the parent company of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling.

For Aer Lingus, United Airlines remains a partner where points can be earned.

Flybe, Kulula, Meridiana and Royal Air Maroc also adopting the Avios currency. Non-IAG members of the loyalty programme are not able to use the “Combine my Avios” scheme in which BA, Iberia and the Avios Travel Rewards Programme participate but have the ability to earn and redeem Avios on partner airline flights and other non-airline services.

AerClub members will collect three Avios points for every €1 spent on flights booked with Aer Lingus. The new AerClub will have four tiers of membership: Gold, Silver, Platinum and Concierge. Tier level dictates whether or not you have lounge access, priority check-in, priority boarding and bonus point earning power.

Gold Circle members is that Aer Lingus customers on social media complained they had no say in whether they want to move over to AerClub or not. Come Tuesday you cease to be a Gold Circle member and become an AerClub member.

The Gold Circle Club has operated since 1987 and offers a Fast Track lane to boarding gates, access to the Gold Circle lounges where there is free food, drink, wifi, newspapers and showering facilities.
