Rising hotel tariffs have stalled domestic tourism demand in Spain this summer according to data from the National Statistics Institute. Average room rates climbed well above inflation reaching nearly €167 in August and €141 in September. Foreign overnight stays grew by 14pc since 2022 to 115.3m accounting for more than two thirds of the total while domestic stays remained flat at around 56m.

In July 2026 domestic overnight stays in Spanish hotels fell by 1.1pc year-on-year while stays by foreign visitors rose by 1.1pc. In August domestic stays dropped by 1.1pc while non-resident stays increased by 2.8pc. Total hotel overnight stays grew by just 0.3pc in July reaching 44.8m and 1.4pc in August exceeding 48.7m showing overall growth was driven by price hikes.

The Hotel Price Index increased by 5.9pc year-on-year in July with the average daily rate hitting €156.92 per occupied room. Persistently high costs and inflation led Spanish residents to shorten average stays to 3.40 days or shift spending toward alternative inland regions and outbound travel. Average length of stay in Catalonia fell below three nights in September despite a record 2.35m visitors.
