Seattle’s Space Needle, Athletic Bilabao‘s football stadium and the Sydney Opera House will be joining the likes of the Christ the Redeemer statue and Rome’s Colosseum in this year’s Global Greening of monuments for St Patrick’s Day.
Launching this year’s initiative, the Minister of State for Tourism, Brendan Griffin, also said Trafalgar Square‘s fountains will be tuning green, as well as Nelson’s Column.
“It’s the first time since 2014 that the Sydney Opera House is going green,” said Tourism Ireland CEO Niall Gibbons at the launch in his organisation’s Dublin headquarters. “And the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio went green because it’s up to the Archbishop of the city and he wanted to honour the city’s Irish missionary connections.”

Mr Gibbons added that the Space Needle’s addition was timely, given the new direct connection from Dublin to Seattle with Aer Lingus. “Irish people love to see places all around the world lit up, and the locals do too,” Brendan Griffin said of the greening, which began nine years ago.
Minister Griffin said Tourism Ireland would also be ramping up its campaign to woo British tourists back, with campaigns in eight Scottish and English cities. “We can’t give up on Britain – it’s too important a market for us,” he said.
The Minister will be attending his first St Patrick’s Day abroad, visiting Mexico City, Guadalajara, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. “St Patrick’s Day trips abroad get a lot of unfair press – we can’t be isolationist in our outlook,” he said, adding that the patron saint’s festival is a time when the world’s eyes are on our island.
