Large crowds turned out in Enniscrone to see the MV Shingle, previously seized for smuggling cigarettes, sunk off the coast of Killala bay to establish Ireland’s first artificial reef, aimed at enhancing marine life and tourism.
The sinking event drew large crowds and was livestreamed, with local groups and small craft participating to witness the occasion.
The project, a collaboration among Killala Bay Ships 2 Reef Ltd., the Revenue Commissioners, and both Mayo and Sligo County Councils, is designed to boost tourism along the Wild Atlantic Way and create job opportunities.
The MV Shingle was originally seized in 2014 after being found with illegal tobacco, and it underwent environmental preparations to ensure it was eco-friendly for its new purpose.
