New South Wales (NSW) saw the largest share of international visitors and highest expenditure in Australia in the year ending March 2024, with visitors spending more nights in the state post-COVID-19.

The latest International Visitor Survey by Tourism Research Australia revealed that NSW was the top destination for international visitors, visitor nights, and expenditure, with 3.7 million international visitors staying 95.2 million nights and spending $11.8 billion in the state.

Sydney, the capital city, attracted 3.4 million international visitors who stayed 79.9 million nights and spent $10.7 billion, making it the leading destination in Australia for international visitors and expenditure.

NSW also led in domestic visitation, visitor nights, and expenditure, welcoming 100.3 million domestic visitors who stayed 117.8 million nights. Regional NSW stood out as the top regional destination for domestic travelers, hosting 66 million visitors and recording 38.9 million domestic day trips, showcasing the state’s strong recovery in the visitor economy. Destination NSW remains committed to enhancing visitor experiences through investments, marketing initiatives, and events.
