Ryanair is interested in purchasing slots that International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG) may have to divest as part of its acquisition of Air Europa.
Ryanair’s country communications manager for Spain expressed interest in acquiring slots in various airports, including the Canary and Balearic Islands and Madrid, as the airline is in a growth phase in Spain.
The European antitrust regulator still needs to approve IAG’s acquisition of Air Europa, as the deal involves IAG purchasing the remaining 80pc of the Spanish carrier for €400m. Ryanair is closely following the process to potentially benefit from slot liberations resulting from the deal.
Elena Cabrera Ryanair’s country communications manager for Spain said: “we are following the process because we are interested in the possible liberation of slots in different airports. We are interested in slots in Canary and Balearic Islands and in Madrid, but the truth is that we are open to any opportunity as we are in growth phase in Spain.”
