Ryanair ranks first among the world’s largest airlines for having the lowest CO2 emissions per available seat kilometre according to aviation research group Cirium, with 63 grammes per ASK in 2024.

The airline aims to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger by 27pc to about 50 grammes by 2031. Wizz Air is top among all airlines, emitting 53.9 grammes of CO2 per available seat kilometre last year.

The transition to sustainable aviation fuel is estimated to cost around $4.7 trillion, with only 0.7pc of fuel requirements being sourced from green fuel this year. The EU’s RefuelEU initiative aims to increase the blending of sustainable aviation fuel from 2pc to 6pc by 2030 and 70pc by 2050.
