Somalia has escalated the diplomatic row with Ethiopia by turning away an aircraft transporting Ethiopian officials to Somaliland, which Somalia considers part of its territory.

The aircraft did not have permission to be in Somalia’s airspace, according to Somalia’s information minister.

The disagreement stems from a deal between Somaliland and Ethiopia, which would involve leasing a port to Ethiopia in exchange for possible recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state.
