Spain’s Teresa Ribero is the new EU Competition commissioner as well as commissioner for climate change.
Ribera has served twice as Spain’s Environment Minister, with her second term including the expanded role of Minister for Ecological Transition and Deputy Prime Minister under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
During her tenure, she oversaw significant environmental reforms, including the closure of Spain’s coal industry and negotiating the phase-out of nuclear power by 2035.
Ribera played a key role in hosting the 2019 U.N. climate talks in Madrid and secured an exemption for Spain and Portugal from certain EU electricity market rules amid the gas crisis.
She has extensive experience in climate change policy, including roles as a civil servant and director of the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations.
Like all commissioners, Ribera will undergo a confirmation hearing in the European Parliament as part of her new commission role.
