Study highlights European airports easing liquid restrictions

A new study has revealed which airports across Europe have relaxed liquid restrictions in hand luggage, providing easier travel for passengers.

Airports across the EU are at various stages of this transition to scrap the 100ml limit and allow up to two litres. In Ireland Dublin (DUB), Belfast City, Belfast International, Shannon (SNN), and Ireland West (NOC) have fully scrapped the 100ml rule. Cork is expected to have it removed for summer 2027.

  • England: London Heathrow (LHR) has finally implemented the change across all terminals (T2, T3, T4, and T5), London Gatwick (LGW) scrapped across both North and South terminals. London City (LCY) was one of the early adopters, Birmingham, Bristol (BRS) and Teeside have all adapted.
  • Finland: Helsinki (HEL) has implemented the relaxed rules in most lanes.
  • Germany: Munich and Frankfurt have gradually updated security lanes, with some fast lanes already operational.
  • Italy: Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa (Terminal 1), Rome Fiumicino, Bologna, and Turin (Fast Track).
  • Netherlands: Amsterdam Schiphol has the scanners but occasionally reverts to 100ml for consistency with EU-wide temporary directives.
  • Scotland: Edinburgh (EDI): Fully operational with the 2L rule.
  • Spain: Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona El-Prat have largely transitioned; others like Palma de Mallorca are expected to follow.
  • Other Noted Locations: Billund (Denmark), Kraków (Poland), and Malta have also implemented the relaxed rules at equipped checkpoints.

Passengers are advised to check before they pack because technical issues have previously caused airports to “U-turn” back to the 100ml rule (as seen in late 2024/early 2025), it is safest to confirm directly on airport website. They should also watch for the “return trip” trap because even if your departure airport allows 2L, your return airport might still enforce the 100ml limit. Always check the rules for both ends of your journey.

In airports where the liquid rule is eased, you can also leave laptops, tablets, and cameras inside your bag
