Witnesses described seeing debris falling from the light aircraft as it spiralled towards the ground before crashing in Co Wexford in 2019, an inquest has found.

The crash, which occurred on October 6, 2019, claimed the lives of pilot John Finnan and flying instructor Peter Tawse.

The two men were on a training flight and had indicated they would be conducting spinning manoeuvres, which were permitted under aviation rules.

The primary cause of the crash was the fracture of the main spar in the left wing, resulting in the separation of the outboard section of the wing.

The in-flight break-up led to the disintegration of the aircraft and the death of both occupants, rendering the accident unsurvivable.

The inquest returned a verdict of accidental death, with no evidence of responsibility or major faults within the aircraft prior to the crash.
