Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced that block Thailand is to block tourists from entering Cambodia across the land border due to rising tensions.

Enhance screening at land borders now applys to all vehicles and individuals attempting to cross the border, impacting foreign tourists travelling to Siem Reap, known for the Angkor Wat temple. The Thai army have implemented the measures at every land border checkpoint between Thailand and Cambodia.

The measures were implemented following an armed confrontation on May 28, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier in a contested area. Essential travel is permitted only for a few categories, such as students and medical patients, while tourists face the prospect of re-evaluating their travel plans.

The Thai government aims to counter illegal operations based in Cambodia that exploit border loopholes, including scam networks targeting foreign tourists. 

Paetongtarn Shinawatra shared “the measures were aimed at stopping people heading toward Cambodia’s lucrative casinos.”
