Trump presidency will be ‘good for aviation’ – Willie Walsh tells Wings of Change conference in Rome

IATA CEO, the Glasnevin-born Willie Walsh, has told the Wings of Change aviaotn conference in Rome that a potential Trump presidency is largely perceived as a positive development for airlines, particularly due to anticipated regulatory changes and pro-aviation policies.

Filip Cornelis told the conference that the new European Commission aims to enhance Europe’s aviation sector by promoting competitiveness while striving for a more sustainable, decarbonized future.

Discussions at the event focused on the critical need for a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) market and the importance of addressing European competitiveness, consumer issues, and aviation infrastructure.

Hemant Mistry from IATA highlighted the estimated $4.7tn that is required to transition to net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050, with the majority of costs attributed to

Generating sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), carbon offsetting via CORSIA, hydrogen for aircraft, and carbon removal initiatives.

A significant number of new renewable fuel plants will be required, with a best-case scenario indicating at least 3,096 plants needed.

In terms of capital expenditure (capex), the best-case scenario predicts a minimum investment of $3.9tn, while the worst-case scenario estimates a maximum of $8.1tn.
