United Airlines says deliveries are set to begin in 2028 for a new order of 110 aircraft having converted existing options and rights.

The airline has secured options for up to 50 more Boeing 787s and for an additional 40 A321neo at the end of the decade.

United Airlines converted previous options and purchase rights into firm orders for 50 Boeing 787-9s, which will be delivered between 2028 and 2031. Additionally, they obtained 60 Airbus A321neos for delivery between 2028 and 2030 and secured new options for up to 50 more Boeing 787s. With this order, United aims to renew its fleet and increase their available seats by flying larger aircraft.

Its order book is now 180 A321 aircraft and 150 Boeing 787, more than any airline in the world.

United CEO Scott Kirby stated that this order aligns perfectly with their United Next plan for the upcoming decades. The airline expects to receive approximately 800 new aircraft by the end of 2032. By leveraging these new aircraft, United plans to significantly increase the number of seats per North American departure, jumping from an average of 104 seats in 2019 to over 145 by 2027, a growth of more than 40pc.

United currently has 180 A321neo and over 370 737 Max aircraft on firm order through 2030. The newly ordered 787-9s will not only simplify their international fleet but also contribute to reducing per-seat carbon emissions when replacing older models. In fact, United will have the largest number of Boeing 787s on firm order compared to any other airline, totaling 150 aircraft. With their ongoing fleet expansion plans, United expects that 75% of their fleet will consist of new-generation aircraft by 2030.
