Vienna Airport handled 3,128,176 passengers in July 2026, reflecting a 4.7pc decrease compared to July 2025, according to the latest traffic figures released by Flughafen Wien AG Group. The decline continues a pattern seen throughout 2026, with June showing 2,832,434 passengers (-5.9pc), May showing 2,743,817 passengers (-5.4pc) and April showing 2,578,674 passengers (-8.2pc). The recent drop in passenger numbers is primarily driven by a significant reduction in capacity from low-cost carriers, including the closure of the Wizz Air base and lower seat numbers from Ryanair.
Ongoing geopolitical impacts, including travel flight cancellations and airspace disruptions relating to the Middle East conflict, have also contributed to the decline. Despite the localized decline at the main Vienna hub, the overarching Flughafen Wien Group, which also operates Malta Airport and Kosice Airport, grew by 1.6pc from January to July due to strong international vacation growth at its sister facilities. The group’s diversified portfolio has helped offset the weakness at Vienna Airport.
The monthly breakdown for 2026 shows consistent year-on-year declines, with the 8.2pc drop in April being the most significant. The closure of the Wizz Air base has been a substantial factor in the capacity reduction, while Ryanair’s lower seat numbers have further compressed supply. The geopolitical impact of the Middle East conflict has added additional pressure on travel demand and airspace availability.
Flughafen Wien AG shared in a written statement: “The decline at Vienna Airport is primarily driven by a significant reduction in capacity from low-cost carriers including the closure of the Wizz Air base and lower seat numbers from Ryanair. Ongoing geopolitical impacts including travel flight cancellations and airspace disruptions relating to the Middle East conflict have added additional pressure.”
