Waterways Ireland has opened the second phase of public consultation on proposed by-law changes to the River Shannon, the first changes in nearly 40 years.

The consultation will run from January 15 to February 26, 2024, and invites the public and interested parties to provide input on revisions to the Shannon Navigation and Canal Byelaws.

The proposed changes include provisions for safety, sustainability, and protection of nature and biodiversity, as well as revisions to fees, permits, and registrations relating to inland waterways and Greenways.

Over 900 submissions were received during the initial consultation, and Waterways Ireland has made revisions based on the feedback received. Public meetings will be held to discuss the changes, and further submissions will be considered before the revised Byelaws are submitted for approval.

Submissions to the public consultation can be made through the online survey on the website, or by email to corporate@waterwaysireland.org, as well as by post to Waterways Ireland Inspectorate, The Docks, Athlone.
