
A major power outage across the Iberian Peninsula on April 28, 2025, caused 13 cancellations at Dublin airport and disruptions to air travel at several major airports in Spain and Portugal, including Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, Faro, and Málaga.
Lisbon Airport (Humberto Delgado Airport was the worst-affected airport, with terminals closed and operations heavily disrupted, not resuming until around 10 PM local time.
According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, three out of ten flights including 146 departures.
Lisbon implemented a complete arrival freeze for part of the day. Movements were cut to 2 in the house between 13.00 and 14.00.
Operations at Madrid (Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport)were severely restricted, with arrival rates slashed to 20 landings per hour initially, increasing to 35 by mid-afternoon. Iberia cancelled 23 of its 247 scheduled flights (approximately 9.3%). Cirium reports that about 3% of departures were grounded
At Barcelona Airport (Barcelona–El Prat Airport) 27 flights were cenacelled (inbound and outbound combined). Operations at Barcelona were partially restored by 3:30 PM local time using backup generators.
Faro Airport’s operations were largely unaffected, continuing “as planned” with limitations due to backup generators. Two Dublin–Faro flights (FR9370 and FR732) were cancelled..
Málaga Airport was not severely affected by the power outage, with operations continuing on backup generators. One Dublin–Alicante flight (FR7062) was cancelled.
