The record numbers through Ireland’s airports this weekend include 30,000 fans returning from Cheltenham national hunt horse racing festival, slightly down on the pre-pandemic peak.

Ireland historically sends a sixth of the 350-plus runners and yields about 30pc of the winners at Cheltenham, this year’s 18-9 result in the Prestbury Cup shows investment in National Hunt racing is declining across the channel & completes a trend started with Ireland’s 8/18 in 1958 led by Vincent O’Brien.
