ACI EUROPE says that air fares in Europe have increased by 38pc over the peak summer months (Q3), which is nearly twice the increase in the average consumer prices index (+20.8pc).
This claim contradicts IATA’s claim that air fares are rising at a rate less than inflation. ACI says airport charges in Europe have only increased by 13.6pc this year, which is much lower than the inflationary pressures faced by airports.
ACI EUROPE’s Director General, Olivier Jankovec, emphasized that airlines have been able to reflect inflationary pressures in their pricing, thanks to supply pressures and capacity discipline, giving them significant pricing power.
While passenger volumes in European airports have recovered, air connectivity remains 17pc below pre-pandemic levels, leading to fewer options for consumers and inflated air fares.
