The government of Sarawak plans for AirBorneo to be fully operational by the end of March 2026 following the acquisition of MASwings from Malaysia Aviation Group.
Sarawak Transport Minister Lee Kim Shin confirmed that preparations are underway for regulatory approvals, recruitment, and the rebranding of the airline.
The acquisition requires AirBorneo Holdings to meet several conditions, including securing approvals from the Malaysian Aviation Commission and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia by December 31, 2025.
Future flights from AirBorneo may include destinations such as Singapore Changi, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, and Hong Kong International, with additional infrastructure improvements at local airports.
The Sarawak government has allocated MYR235m (USD52.6m) to fund upgrades at Miri and other airports, including the construction of a new terminal to accommodate increased passenger capacity and enhance connectivity.
