Carlow comes from the Irish “Ceatharlach,” meaning “place of cattle” or “four lakes,” possibly from “ceathar” (four) and “loch” (lake) or a term for livestock. The etymology is rooted in Old Irish, tied to local geography or economy. The first recorded use of “Ceatharlach” appears in the Annals of the Four Masters around the 6th century, with the anglicised “Carlow” documented in Norman records by the 13th century.
