The number of marriages in Ireland has fallen by 7.7pc from 22,045 in 2014 to 20,348 in 2024. Catholic ceremonies have decreased by almost 51pc from 13,071 to 6,425 over the decade. Civil registrations have become the most common type with 6,743 ceremonies in 2024.
Humanist ceremonies have risen by 68pc between 2014 and 2024. Church of Ireland ceremonies have accounted for one in every hundred marriages in 2024 compared with two in every hundred in 2014. The five most popular ceremony types in 2024 have accounted for 85pc of all wedding ceremonies.
Civil registrations, Catholic ceremonies, Humanist ceremonies, Spiritualist Union of Ireland and OneSpirit have made up the top five types in 2024. Catholic ceremonies, civil registrations, Humanist ceremonies, Spiritualist Union of Ireland and Church of Ireland ceremonies formed the top five in 2014.
