A panel discussion discussed passenger rights regulations and their effectiveness based on available data during a session at the IATA AGM in Rio de Janeiro. Alexis Von Hoensbroech CEO of WestJet joined panellists including Thomas Reynaert of IATA and Kimberly Graber of Steptoe LLP to review outcomes of existing frameworks. The session ran from 11:45 to 12:15 and focused on what data reveals about the success of such regulations along with prospects for improvements to EU261.

Panellists examined the financial burden on airlines with EU261 reported to cost the industry around €8 billion annually while 99pc of passengers never receive compensation. Discussions addressed challenges in the current European system and risks of similar models spreading to other markets. Moderated by Clare Sebastian of CNN the panel considered data driven insights into passenger experiences and operational impacts.

Participants reviewed possibilities for balanced reforms that protect consumers while supporting industry sustainability. The session formed part of the 82nd IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro. It highlighted the need for regulation that reflects actual disruption causes and shared responsibilities across the aviation value chain.
