Qantas has entered discussions with Airbus and Boeing about a potential order for around 20 widebody jets. Industry sources indicated the order could include additional B787s or A350-900s. The Australian carrier confirmed it maintains regular contact with manufacturers as part of fleet planning.
Qantas already holds outstanding widebody orders that comprise 24 A350-1000s, four B787-9s and eight B787-10s. It also expects delivery of 42 more A321-200NY(XLR) narrowbody aircraft. The A350-1000 programme includes 12 ultra-long range variants for Project Sunrise routes to London Heathrow and New York JFK.
Deliveries of the first A350-1000 face a four-month delay to April 2027 because of supply chain issues. The current Qantas fleet includes 14 B787-9s along with A330s, A380s and B737-800s among other types.
Qantas shared “It is in regular contact with aircraft manufacturers as part of our ongoing fleet planning.”
