Lufthansa has signed a Letter of Intent with Airbus, Munich airport, MTU Aero Engines, and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) for research collaboration on Power-to-Liquid (PtL) aviation fuels.
The collaboration aims to accelerate the technology selection, market introduction, and industrial scaling of PtL aviation fuels in Germany.
PtL fuels use regeneratively generated electricity, water, and CO2 from the atmosphere to produce a syngas that can be turned into sustainable aviation fuel.
The partnership will involve testing pure PtL fuels without fossil kerosene and exploring their potential to reduce CO2 and non-CO2 emissions in aviation
Airline bodies are calling on governments worldwide to “get serious” on incentivising SAF, warning that there is currently a “massive gap” between demand and production.
