A320 aircraft deliveries are to surpass those of Boeing’s 737 for the first time. Research from Cirium indicates a pivotal moment in the Airbus/Boeing competition.

Airbus, despite engine shortages, has maintained more consistent aircraft production. Cirium data shows that as of early August 2025, Boeing had delivered a total 12,175 737s since handing the first -100 to Lufthansa in December 1967. Airbus delivered the first A320-100 to Air France in March 1988 (18 years after the OEM was established) and has now shipped a total of 12,153. The current delivery rates should see the two paths cross very soon.

Max Kingsley-Jones of Cirium shared: “Sometime in the next month or so, the five-decade long Airbus / Boeing rivalry will reach a momentous point, when cumulative deliveries of A320 family aircraft will overtake those of the B737. Did anyone back then expect [the A320]could become number one – and on such high production volumes? I certainly didn’t, and nor probably did Airbus.”
