A cross-party Oireachtas group is advocating for increased flight distribution to Shannon Airport to lessen Dublin Airport’s dominance in Irish aviation.
The group has called for legislative changes and state support to enhance infrastructural upgrades at Shannon Airport. They want a reallocation of flight slots, which they say are not being rigidly enforced at present to compel airlines to allocate a certain number of flights to other airports around the country.
The group, which has met on two occasions thus far, consists of 24 Oireachtas members from Clare, Galway, Limerick and Tipperary and is chaired by Fianna Fáil TD for Clare, Cathal Crowe.
The group aims to have Shannon Airport included in the Regional Airports Programme, which currently excludes larger airports from state funding.
Recent figures show that 68.8pc of flights in Ireland were managed by Dublin Airport in 2024 and 18.2pc by the two Belfast airports, while Shannon Airport handled 4.1pc.
