Gatwick Airport has completed the installation of Smiths Detection computed tomography (CT) scanners, enabling passengers to leave laptops in bags, and potentially liquids as well. .
Passengers can now keep electrical items and liquids (up to 100ml) in their cabin bags during screening at any of the airport’s 19 security lanes.
The upgrade comes after a government announcement in December 2022 requiring UK airports to replace existing 2D screening technology with advanced CT scanners.
While there were hopes to increase the liquid limit to two litres, the Department for Transport reinstated the 100ml limit for safety reasons.
According to Cyrus Dana, head of security, most passengers currently pass through Gatwick’s security in under five minutes: “More than 95pc of passengers already pass through security at London Gatwick in under five minutes. This is a positive change, with the scanners allowing our passengers to travel through the airport with more ease.
“As we continue to grow, our top priority is the safety of our passengers and the security of the airport. This cutting-edge technology ensures a safe and robust experience for our passengers.
“At London Gatwick we pride ourselves on providing a great passenger experience and as we head into a busy summer season we look forward to continuing to deliver that service.”
