Amsterdam Schiphol Airport plans to increase fees for airlines by 37pc over three years, causing concerns among airline customers, particularly KLM, which fears this will lead to higher ticket prices and make Schiphol the second most expensive airport in Europe.

Despite having sufficient runway capacity, Schiphol’s prolonged reliance on a single terminal has resulted in longer transfer times for passengers, contributing to dissatisfaction among travellers.

The fee hikes are expected to disproportionately affect short-haul travellers, while potentially benefiting rail services like Eurostar, which plans to resume its Amsterdam-London service in 2024, with an expanded terminal to accommodate more passengers.

Once celebrated as the best airport in Europe, has faced challenges due to congestion and a government-imposed capacity cap, leading to a decline in its competitive position.
