Minister Darragh O’Brien has published Ireland’s first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Policy Roadmap today.
A written press release accompanying the announcement says that the aviation sector’s decarbonisation is a significant challenge requiring new solutions and that publication represents a commitment from the Government towards aviation industry sustainability.
Ireland’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel Task Force was established in December 2023 to guide SAF policy. The Roadmap outlines initial actions for developing Ireland’s national SAF policy.
Minister O’Brien shared “I am delighted to officially launch Ireland’s first Sustainable Aviation Fuel Policy Roadmap. The Roadmap recognises the important contribution that Sustainable Aviation Fuel can make toward decarbonising the aviation industry.”
The report concluded: “the most viable pathway for commercial scale SAF production in Ireland appears to be eSAF. in terms of Europe, only certain southern and northern regions with high solar and wind power availability, are suitable for eSAF production. The case was often made that Ireland may have a unique opportunity to leverage its coastal winds.”
