Barry Cowen has told at the Irish Hotels Federation conference in Killarney that rmeoving the Dublin Airport cap is vital for the tourism sector’s future.
Fianna Fáil MEP Mr Cowen welcomed initiatives from the Government, including a review of the food-led hospitality VAT rate and the establishment of an EU Commissioner for Tourism, aimed at enhancing support for the tourism industry.
Mr Cowen told the delegates “tourism is the heartbeat of Ireland’s economy, supporting jobs and communities across the country. But without action on competitiveness challenges, we risk losing our edge to other destinations and reduced domestic demand.
“Ireland’s connectivity is a key driver of tourism success and the Dublin Airport cap remains a major concern. We need solutions that balance sustainability with capacity expansion to ensure our aviation network supports – not limits – growth.
“My hope is that the creation of an EU Commissioner for Tourism could be a game-changer. It sends a clear message that tourism is finally being recognised at the highest levels in Brussels, and I’ll be pushing to ensure Irish interests are well represented in that space.
“There is no doubt that the cost of doing business has skyrocketed and this is putting enormous pressure on tourism and hospitality operators. From rising insurance premiums to sky-high energy bills, we need a targeted response that supports businesses rather than burdens them further.
“The next Government must prioritise a fair and sustainable tax framework for the sector. That means the reinstatement of the 9pc VAT rate on food, implementation of a fair PRSI model and tackling competitiveness challenges including the cap at Dublin airport and energy costs.”
