Iceland’s most active volcano in recent times has erupted for the ninth time, causing the Blue Lagoon to be evacuated again. The eruption started shortly before 4 AM on July 16th in the Sundhnúkur fissure, near Grindavík.
Authorities safely evacuated the Blue Lagoon and nearby Grindavík as a precaution. The volcanic activity is localised and has no adverse effects on other Iceland attractions or infrastructure.
Both air traffic and airports in Iceland remain operational and unaffected by the ongoing activity.
Matthew Roberts of Icelandic Meteorological Office shared, “The country is exceptionally well prepared to handle it. Eruptions are typically confined to specific, localized areas near the eruption site. The lava flow poses no threat to infrastructure. You can check current air quality conditions here. The eruption area and Grindavík are closed to the public for safety reasons.”
