Police Scotland has confirmed a body has been recovered following a major search and rescue operation for a male passenger reported to have gone overboard from the Ambassador Cruise Line vessel MS Ambition off the east coast of Scotland. The alarm was raised at approximately 8:35 am on Friday 21 August 2026, when the ship was positioned about 36 nautical miles east of Arbroath, Angus, while sailing from Lerwick to Dundee on its return journey from a solar eclipse cruise. Crew members realised the passenger was missing when he failed to appear in the morning, with his luggage still in the cabin and his bed not having been slept in.
England’s Coastguard coordinated the rescue operation, deploying aircraft from Prestwick and Carlisle, a commercial search and rescue helicopter, and nearby vessels. Lifeboat crews from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry joined the search alongside Coastguard teams from Dundee, Arbroath, and St Andrews. The ship docked at the port of Dundee on Friday morning, and passengers were initially kept on board for a thorough ship-wide search before being permitted to disembark at approximately 11:30 am. Formal identification has not yet taken place, but the missing man’s family has been informed.
Ambassador Cruise Line confirmed the turnaround operation in Dundee was slightly delayed, though guests due to embark were advised to proceed according to their scheduled times. The MS Ambition departed Dundee for Newcastle later on Friday evening. The cruise line stated it is working closely with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, HM Coastguard, and Police Scotland as the investigation continues.
Chief Inspector John Macdonald of Police Scotland shared: “Around 8.55am on Friday, 21 August 2026, we received a report that a man had gone overboard from a cruise ship in the North Sea, and a search and rescue operation carried out by police and partner agencies has been ongoing, with a body having been recovered.”
