The global hotel construction pipeline has reached an all-time high of 15,976 projects and 2,433,948 rooms in the second quarter of 2026, according to Lodging Econometrics, marking a significant expansion of international hospitality supply. The United States leads with 5,975 projects, while China holds second place with 3,588 developments, together accounting for nearly six in ten projects worldwide. Around 2,742 hotels are expected to open during 2026, adding approximately 380,000 rooms, with a further 2,590 openings forecast for 2027 and 2,499 for 2028, bringing the total for the three-year period to 7,831 new hotels.

The pipeline breaks down into three distinct phases: 6,174 projects are currently under construction accounting for 1,043,290 rooms; 3,743 projects are scheduled to start within the next 12 months accounting for 530,326 rooms; and a record-high 6,059 projects in the early planning stage account for 860,332 rooms. The luxury chain scale has reached a record high with 1,385 projects and 257,947 rooms in development, while lifestyle and upper upscale segments are experiencing strong growth. Brand conversions and renovations have also increased, with 2,927 conversion projects in the pipeline, up 12pc year-over-year.

India is showing explosive growth with its pipeline up 36pc, while the United States forecasts 832 new hotel openings in 2028 alone. Europe is maintaining a steady growth pace, forecasting just over 300 new properties for both 2027 and 2028. This massive influx of new properties creates a significant procurement window for global suppliers across multiple categories, including furniture, food and beverage equipment, and smart hotel technology. For travellers, the expansion signals an era of greater choice, featuring properties built around distinct local personalities, wellness retreats, and experiential luxury.
