Boeing’s financial chief, Brian West, warned shareholders of a significant first quarter loss.

The commercial aircraft division’s operating profit margin is expected to sink to around -20%, the biggest loss margin in two years.

Production work has slowed and extra costs are accruing due to increased scrutiny following the Alaska Airlines blowout incident.

The losses are partially attributed to compensation owed to airline customers, with Alaska Airlines estimating a $150m cost from the short grounding of 737 Max planes.
