Carravagio, Clarke & Turner: National Gallery announces programme for 2016-2017

The National Gallery of Ireland have announced their exhibitions for 2016-2017. There will also be a number of talks and art workshops, and documentary screenings, see here for details, and special family events and workshops and tours aimed at parents. In honour of Ireland’s Decade of Centenaries, the Stories of Ireland in Art is a series of fifty paintings depicting events in Ireland’s history from the arrival of St Patrick to the Free State. The paintings themselves date from the 17th to the mid 20th century. Artists include James Barry, Charles Russell, John Lavery, William Orpen, Richard Moynan Charlotte Schreiber, Sean Keating, Henry Lamb, Jack B. Yeats, Jan Wyck, Joseph Patrick Haverty, and Archibald McCoogan. A free audioguide wil accompany the exhibition, available in both English and Irish. A book, edited by Brendan Rooney, has been published by Irish Academic Press for the occasion.

The Hennessy portrait prize aims to encourage interest in modern portraiture. The shortlisted portraits will go on display from the 26th of november. The winner of the 2016 Hennessy Portrait Prize will be announced at an awards ceremony on the 29th November. The judging panel includes Jackie Nickerson, Gemma Tipton, Peter Murray, and Dr Adriaan Waiboer. 

31 paintings by J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) were bequested by an English collector Henry Vaughan (1809-1899) in the year 1900 to the Natinal Galleries of Ireland and Scotland. He stipulated, as a condition, that the valuable watercolours would be exhibited in January, every year, without charge. Come and be part of a 117 year tradition this January. The exhibition includes works from all periods of Turner’s career.

Four major works by Caravaggio will be prominent at the ‘Beyond Caravaggio’ exhibition ( February 11 2017- May  142017): The Supper at Emmaus (1601, National Gallery, London), The Taking of Christ (1602, National Gallery of Ireland), Boy Bitten by a Lizard (1594-95, National Gallery of London) and Boy Peeling Fruit (1592, The Royal Collection). Why ‘Beyond Caravaggio? The exhibition will demonstrate the way in which Caravaggio influenced those who came after him, and includes over 40 works from various artists (for example Georges de la Tour’s Dice Players and Valentin de Boulogne’s Concert with Three Figures). The paintings can be seen at The National Gallery, London, October 12 2016- January 15 2017; National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin on February 11- May 14 2017; The National Gallery, Edinburgh, June 17- September 24 2017.

The Art of Margaret Clarke RHA (1884-1964)‘ will be on display from May 10- August 20 2017, looking at her lifes, works, interests, and her skills in portraiture, painting, and sketching. This exhibition will go on tour in F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio, Banbridge, Co. Down from September 15- November 18 2017.

The relationships between various Dutch genre painters between 1650-1675 will be examined in an exhibit from June 17 to September 17, which will have 10 works by Johannes Vermeer. 

From October 25 2017- January 14 2018 the work of Frederic William Burton will be on display.
