Lobbyists have renewed calls for the restoration of the former workhouse in Tipperary town as a heritage building.
The building constructed between 1839 and 1841 fell into dereliction andplans to convert the building into a hostel in the 2000s were abandoned in 2010. Fires and vandalism affected the site in recent years and a 2019 sale attempt by Tipperary County Council did not proceed.
Fine Gael councillor John Crosse praised director of services Damien Ginty for reviewing the at a recent local authority meeting. The councillor appealed for promotion of the workhouse through tourism initiatives as a long-term project with potential.
John Crosse shared “If there was any way that the workhouse could be brought to fruition, I know it’s probably a long-term project, but we should be the ones leading the way in getting work advanced in Tipperary town, it has potential.”
