Eoghan Corry, owner of Travel Extra, responded to Clare TD Cathal Crowe’s comments during a recent interview.
Mr Crowe claimed that Travel Extra suggested a return to the Shannon stopover, a point which was not mentioned in their article.
He reiterated his proposal that the slots allocation system at Dublin should be used to encourage airlines to operate to Shannon and, he says, reduce the dominance of Dublin.
Mr Corry shared that many of the routes operating at Dublin may not be viable for Shannon.
According to him, Dublin’s 70% share of overall aviation to and from the island is low when compared to international standards.
Some countries such as Estonia, Lativa, Luxemburg, Malta and Slovenia have just one airport, Hungary, Finland and the Czech republic have 90pc travelling through their lead airport, figures for Copenhagen are 89.6pc, Amsterdam 86pc and Vienna, which is geographically almost exactly the same size as Ireland, is 88pc.
Countries with over 70pc travelling through their lead airport include Slovakia, Sweden, Lithuania, Ireland, Cyprus with Brussels at 68pc of Belgium’s traffic.
