Consular Forum at DFA hears of travel trends for 2024 as assistance requests rise 20pc

travel Extra’s Eoghan Corry was among the speakers at the Department of Foreign Affairs Consular Forum which heard of travel trends for 2024.

Fiona Penollar says incidents affecting Irish citizens abroad are up 20pc in 2023 than 2022, with conflicts in Sudan and the middle east impacting of Irish. “Irish citizens can be found in an increasingly diverse number of countries, she said. “We supplied clear, objective and up to date travel advice for 200 destinations. We issued 2,700 certificates of freedom to marry abroad. We have issued 47,000 authentication stamps.”

The Department is updating its consular strategy and advice to citizens.

The DFA dealt with about 1,500 new consular assistance cases in 2022 to help irish citizens abroad and many other cases which were ongoing, ranging from serious cases of death, forced marriage, detention and digital kidnap of a citizen to lost passport and minor medical accidents.
