Fáilte Ireland has launched the Fire and Shadows Processions, a pilot scheme taking place in Limerick, Longford, and Waterford during the October Bank Holiday weekend. The scheme aims to establish Ireland as the “Home of Halloween” and enhance existing Samhain and Halloween festivals.

The processions pay homage to Samhain, the Irish and Celtic festival marking the end of harvest and the thinning of the veil between the living and the departed. It celebrates Ireland’s rich history and its influence on Halloween customs worldwide.

The Fire and Shadows Processions will take visitors on a journey through darkness and light, showcasing Celtic mythology, eerie folklore, and the spirit of Samhain. Various mythical creatures and spirits will converge, creating a captivating and immersive experience for participants.

Each location will have its own unique procession. Waterford will reveal seven gates to the underworld, where demons, ghouls, and fairies will roam the city. Limerick’s procession will awaken the spirits of the Shannon River, featuring mythical creatures and culminating in a fiery performance. Longford’s procession will showcase creatures of nature, such as owls and foxes, with a finale at Connolly Barracks involving a Samhain fire.

The Fire and Shadows Processions aim to promote Ireland’s cultural heritage, attract visitors to lesser-known areas, and provide economic opportunities for local businesses. This initiative aligns with Fáilte Ireland’s strategy to diversify tourism offerings.

The Fire and Shadows Processions promise to bring the story of Samhain to life, celebrate Ireland as the Home of Halloween, and provide memorable experiences for both locals and visitors.
